Legionella Testing
Legionella is a type of bacteria naturally found in freshwater environments such as ponds, rivers, and lakes. In small quantities, Legionella in water poses little risk, but under the right conditions, it can multiply rapidly within man-made systems such as hot and cold-water tanks, showers, cooling towers, and pipework.
When Legionella bacteria reaches dangerous levels (typically above 10 CFU/mL), it can cause Legionnaires’ disease, a potentially serious form of pneumonia. Even mains water can contain trace amounts of Legionella, which can grow within hours if the temperature, flow, or maintenance conditions are poor.
Regular Legionella detection helps ensure your systems remain safe and compliant, particularly in higher-risk settings such as offices, schools, and healthcare environments. Legionella growth can occur due to stagnant water, poor temperature control, nutrient build-up, or lack of management, all of which increase the risk when water droplets (aerosols) become airborne.
